ICT for rural women's development
This research portal is a fruit of Meera Joseph’s commitment to empowering rural women using Information and Communication Technologies. ICT should not lead to mere urbanizations of rural areas, but the empowerment of rural community. The rural areas are needed for earth’s sustainability and rural women are the main resources for agricultural sector and indigenous knowledge. Rural women are marginalized and denied basic access to education and health and often banned from decision-making processes in the community. This portal focuses on the eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) agreed at the U N Millennium Summit in Sep 2000 were:
•Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
•Achieve universal primary education
•Promote gender equality and empower women
•Reduce child mortality
•Improve maternal health
•Combat HIV and AIDS, malaria and other diseases
•Ensure environmental sustainability
•Develop a global partnership for development
